Black fox....coyote question
« on: December 31, 2016, 04:57:47 PM »
I have seen a black fox on two occasions this past month.  I'm guessing it is the same fox both times, since both sightings were in the same exact spot (a fox den).  Then recently, I had a farmer tell me that he sighted a black coyote.  Since the sightings were about twenty miles apart, it isn't likely that he saw the black fox that I saw.  My question is:  has any one seen a for sure black coyote in eastern Washington? If so, how common is this color phase in this part of the country?

Dark ones around in the far east, have never seen a black one.  My perception is most of the dark ones have some fido influence.

I saw a black coyote in the Wenas in front of my house.  He was in my scope, but I couldnt pull the trigger because it wasnt a safe shot. He was with 5 or six normal coyotes and stood out like a sore thumb.   I saw him three or four times, but was never able to harvest him.   There are several black foxes that are routinely seen less than 20 miles away, so it happens for sure.

FWIW saw a jet black fox in Sequim about 40 years ago.  Was told it was offspring of silver fox released by a fox farm.  :dunno:

I grew up in E. WA and never saw a black coyote there though hunted them a lot in the 60's.  Have seen two black ones in BC, one of them near Vernon about 150 miles north of Oroville, the other four years ago a mile north of the border near Blaine.

In northern BC near Dease Lake black and grey colored foxes are as common or more so than red ones.  I think that they are all the same species that, like "black" bears, come in a variety of colors mostly depending on the local gene pool.

I seen a black coyote back in 2014 in the bottom end of Kelley Hollow. Could be the same one.
